Detectives have praised a domestic violence victim for her bravery that led to her abuser being jailed.
Just before 1am on 27 January 2024, Olegs Arklins’ victim rang police saying he was intoxicated at her address and was making threats towards her. While on the phone to a call handler from our Contact Management Department (CMD), Arklins stabbed her.
Officers rushed to the address in Norfolk Street, Westcotes, where they found Arklins, 45, sat on a pavement outside. He was immediately arrested and other officers went into the property where they took care of the victim until the East Midlands Ambulance Service arrived.
The victim, now aged 40, was taken to hospital and underwent life-saving surgery. She has since made a full recovery.
In interview, Arklins – of no fixed address – said he had not intended to kill her, but was charged with attempted murder.
Following a trial at Leicester Crown Court, Arklins was sentenced there on Friday 3 October to 27 years’ imprisonment.
Detective Constable Vik Patel, from our Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit (DAIU), was the officer in the case. He said: “This was a horrific incident that very nearly led to a woman losing her life.
“Not only has she thankfully recovered from her injury, she has shown great strength and bravery in providing an account that led to Arklins being convicted and now locked up for a very long time.
“He is a dangerous individual who, despite saying it was not his intention to kill, clearly carried out his actions with that motive. I hope the public can take some reassurance from the fact he’s in prison and unable to harm any other members of the public.”
