2025 Abusive controlling and abused every partner he has had currently on remand for beating up his vulnerable neighbour

October 3, 2024 — “Woman Thrown Across the Room by ‘Drunken Thug’ at Her New Year’s Eve Party”

A domestic attack on New Year’s Eve ended with a man avoiding immediate jail time after the court opted to monitor him under a “controlled experiment.”

Incident & Outcome
During a New Year’s Eve gathering, James Reed, 25, of Collingwood Court, Sulgrave, Washington, threw the woman with whom he was in a relationship across a room amid a dispute. The victim hit a mirror, which shattered, and then struck her head on a wall.

A separate incident in March also featured in the court case: after drinking at a wake, Reed “ragged her around,” inflicting a cut to her leg and damaging her home.

At the time, Reed was subject to a community order for assaulting a police officer and had a record of previous violence.

Sentencing & “Controlled Experiment”
Reed pleaded guilty to assault and common assault against his partner. Judge Amanda Rippon called him a “drunken thug” and replaced his existing community order with a more serious one: six months in custody, suspended for 18 months, contingent on his behaviour.

The judge further delayed final sentencing until March, giving Reed an opportunity to demonstrate he could stay out of trouble and work with probation — calling it a “controlled experiment.”

Reed was told to find work, keep his distance from the victim, avoid trouble, and “do something constructive” before the next hearing.

Victim Impact & Relocation
The victim told the court she feared she “could end up seriously hurt or worse” by Reed, and the judge noted she had moved home for her safety.

Years before the domestic assault case, Reed was involved in a violent altercation using a weapon in public, with children present.

Incident Details
In September 2017, Reed turned up at the home of his ex-girlfriend’s mother in Washington and refused to leave when asked.

During the confrontation, Reed removed a key from his pocket, held it between his fingers, and used it as a makeshift weapon. He struck the victim’s partner in the upper torso and head, leaving marks on his arms, chest, and back.

When the mother intervened, she also was struck. The incident happened as schoolchildren were walking home nearby, and a neighbour shouted at Reed to leave, calling his conduct disgraceful in front of children.

Aftermath & Legal Consequences
In subsequent days, Reed returned to the address and harassed the victims, calling them “grasses” (i.e. informers).

He admitted to affray and witness intimidation, and spent over three months on remand — the first time he had been held in custody.

Judge Amanda Rippon described the makeshift key‑weapon as a serious weapon in his hands and noted the presence of children at the scene aggravated the offence.
