David Hodgson, aged 34 and from Ryton, Gateshead, was sentenced at Durham Crown Court after being found guilty of a series of violent and sexual offences.
These included:
- Six counts of rape
- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm
- Assault by penetration
- Common assault
The court heard Hodgson subjected his victim to repeated attacks across County Durham, using his physical strength to overpower her. He reportedly “degraded and humiliated” his victim, and showed no remorse during trial — smirking, yawning, and appearing bored throughout.
Judge Recorder Mark Giuliani described Hodgson as having “unhealthy, perverse sexual desires”. Despite defence claims portraying him as a “big, friendly giant with a heart of gold”, the judge ruled there was a serious risk of reoffending.
The victim now suffers from PTSD, depression, and anxiety, and remains on medication following the abuse. She said Hodgson had “destroyed” her life.
Sentence: 24 years in prison, a lifelong restraining order, and registration on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
