Hartlepool Man Jailed for Three Years After Sex Assault on Woman Who Rejected Him

Date: 27 May 2021

Anthony Sowerby, 21, of Emerson Court, Hartlepool, has been jailed after subjecting a woman to a sexual assault when she rejected his advances. He was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court after admitting indecent assault and a separate attack on his then-girlfriend.

The court heard that Sowerby, who had been drinking heavily, approached a woman and repeatedly groped her despite her attempts to stop him. He touched her chest multiple times, grabbed her bottom, and then exposed himself. He later followed the victim and assaulted her again.

In a separate incident, Sowerby struck his girlfriend across the face. Both attacks occurred while he was just four months into a suspended sentence for burglary, showing a complete disregard for the law.

🔹 Sentencing Summary:

  • Jailed for 3 years (36 months)
  • Ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years
  • Alcohol cited as a factor in his offending

Recorder Alex Menary described Sowerby’s criminal record as “troubling” and highlighted the seriousness of his actions.

In mitigation, defence counsel Alex Bousfield said Sowerby was attempting to turn his life around with a new job and relationship, but accepted the incidents were a “terrible mistake.”
