MAN JAILED FOR MORE THAN 13 YEARS AFTER GROOMING AND RAPING TEENAGE GIRL
A 23-year-old man who groomed a teenage girl online before travelling from London to Bedfordshire to sexually exploit her has been jailed for 13-and-a-half years.
Joshua Gray targeted the girl through TikTok before moving their conversations onto Discord, where he sent her numerous sexually explicit messages over a period of four days.
The online grooming ultimately progressed to Gray travelling from London to a village near Bedford, where he persuaded the girl to leave home and meet him at a local park late at night.
Once there, Gray raped and sexually assaulted her.
The teenager was subsequently reported missing, prompting police officers to begin searching for her.
Officers found her at the park and, following swift enquiries, identified Gray as the suspect. He was located and arrested.
The investigation was led by Bedfordshire Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People team and resulted in Gray admitting a series of serious offences.
Gray, of Ellanby Crescent, London, appeared at Luton Crown Court on Friday, 2 October, where he was sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison.
He had pleaded guilty to several offences, including rape, sexual assault, sexual communication with a child and intentional strangulation.
In addition to the prison sentence, Gray was made subject to a 20-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
A restraining order was also imposed and will remain in place until further notice.
Detective Constable Lauren Byrne, who investigated the case, said Gray had deliberately targeted a vulnerable young girl online and manipulated her into meeting him before abusing her.
She praised the victim for the courage she showed in supporting the police investigation and said the sentence demonstrated the force’s determination to pursue offenders who exploit and abuse children.
Police have also used the case to highlight the dangers of online grooming and the difficulties parents and carers can face in recognising when a child is being targeted.
Potential warning signs can include a child becoming unusually secretive about how they spend their time, suddenly having unexplained money or possessions, developing relationships with significantly older people, becoming withdrawn or upset, changing the amount of time they spend online, using unexpected sexual language or increasingly spending time away from home.
Children who are being groomed may not recognise what is happening to them. Offenders can spend time building trust and manipulating victims before attempting to move conversations onto more private platforms or arranging face-to-face meetings.
Bedfordshire Police urged anyone with concerns about the sexual exploitation of a child to report them, stressing that it is never too late for victims to come forward.
