JOHN WARDLE JAILED FOR 22 YEARS AFTER CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE TRIAL

John Wardle was sentenced to 22 years in prison at Nottingham Crown Court in August 2024 after a jury convicted him of rape and other sexual offences. The investigation uncovered offending that began when he was young and continued into adulthood.

Police first received a report in 2018 about abuse dating back to the early 2000s. As detectives examined those allegations, they learned of further sexual assaults committed years later against another vulnerable young person.

In that part of the investigation, the abuse had been presented as medical examinations. It came to light after the victim spoke to someone else about what had happened. The information became part of the wider case brought before the court.

Wardle denied the allegations and accused the victims of lying. An earlier trial ended when the jury could not agree on verdicts. A subsequent jury considered the case at Nottingham Crown Court in July 2024 and found him guilty.

The convictions included four counts of rape, rape of a child under 13, sexual assault and sexual assault of a child under 13. He was also convicted of four counts of sexual activity with a vulnerable person.

At sentencing, the court imposed the 22-year prison term. Wardle was placed on the sex offenders register and made subject to a restraining order preventing future contact with the victims.

The investigating detective described a lengthy process in which the victims had shown determination despite the impact of the offending and the difficulty of giving evidence. The outcome followed their reports and the investigation that brought the separate allegations together.
