Shaun Clark

📍Shaun Clark – Sunderland

📝 Summary

Shaun Clark involved in physical and emotional abuse. A Redhouse man has been jailed after strangling his girlfriend during a violent attack at a local hotel—while already on bail for a previous assault against the same woman. Shaun Clark, 41, of Runcorn Road in Redhouse, admitted two offences: one of assault and another of intentional strangulation. The first incident took place in November 2023, when Clark placed his hand over the woman’s nose and mouth, restricting her ability to breathe. Despite bail conditions ordering him to stay away, the couple later attended a wedding together in November last year. After returning to a Sunderland hotel, Clark launched a second attack—strangling the victim once again. Prosecutor Claire Anderson told the court: “He got on top of her and strangled her, restricting her ability to breathe.” Clark, who had been drinking on both occasions, was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Newcastle Crown Court. A seven-year restraining order was also issued to protect the victim. Judge Tim Gittins, in his remarks, criticised the historic leniency of courts toward domestic violence and emphasised the severe danger posed by strangulation. > “It is controlling, it is terrifying, and it is capable of being one of the most dangerous acts… You here, on two occasions, have used your size and power to cause her terror,” the judge said. “All men like you need to appreciate that the days of it being brushed under the carpet have gone.” He further stated that Clark had now lost his good character and reputation, adding: “You are a bad drunk—when you are drunk, you are violent and aggressive.” Defence barrister Nicholas Lane said Clark fully accepted responsibility and wished to apologise for the harm caused. He added that Clark has a good prospect of rehabilitation.
