Abdul Omer – Chelmsford

A sex predator has been jailed for eight years after raping a homeless woman while she slept in a Southend car park she had made her makeshift home.

Detectives launched an investigation last year after a woman in her 50s reported being assaulted by a man she did not known in Great Eastern Avenue, Southend, on August 23 in 2025.

The woman told officers her attacker said his name was ‘Akky’. Enquiries in the Southend area allowed officers to establish that this was Abdul Omer.

The 31-year-old was found to be living at an address on St Fabian’s Drive in Chelmsford. The city’s neighbourhood policing team were informed and, after he was spotted by the Chelmsford City Council CCTV team, he was arrested the next day.

Omer was subsequently charged with rape, which he admitted at Basildon Crown Court in January.

He was sentenced on Wednesday (August 26) to eight years behind bars with a further four on licence.
