Accrington man convicted after CCTV captured repeated attacks on German Shepherd puppy

An Accrington man has been convicted of animal cruelty after CCTV footage showed him repeatedly striking, kicking and dragging his seven-month-old German Shepherd puppy.

Daniel Blake Monaghan, of Whalley Road, was recorded carrying out several attacks on the dog, named Chase, outside his flat.

The footage showed Monaghan striking the puppy on the head with a rucksack, standing on his lead while hitting him across the back and kicking him into a sitting position. He was also seen pulling Chase backwards until he fell before kicking him again on a hind leg.

After the attacks, Chase could be seen moving away in a crouched and fearful posture, with his tail tucked underneath him and avoiding eye contact.

The recordings were reported to the RSPCA, which launched an investigation. Police later attended the property and removed Chase for his protection.

A veterinary expert who reviewed the footage concluded that the puppy had suffered and remained at risk of further pain or injury unless his circumstances changed.

Chase was taken to the RSPCA’s Greater Manchester Animal Hospital for treatment before ownership was legally transferred to the charity, allowing him to be rehomed.

Now renamed Wolfe, the German Shepherd has since settled into a new home, where he lives with another dog. He reportedly gained almost 10kg in eight weeks and now weighs around 39kg.

Monaghan received a 12-month community order, including 80 hours of unpaid work and 15 rehabilitation activity days. He was ordered to pay £200 in costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

He was also banned from keeping animals for ten years, with the prohibition remaining in place until 2036.
