Woman breaks silence over alleged domestic abuse to raise awareness after social media post goes viral
A woman has spoken publicly about what she describes as years of alleged domestic abuse, coercive control and manipulation at the hands of her former partner in a bid to encourage others to recognise the warning signs of abusive relationships.
The emotional Facebook post, which has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times and widely shared across North Wales, was published after the woman said she could no longer stay silent.
In the post, she alleged her former partner presented himself online as a devoted father while their private life was “a completely different story”.
She claimed she endured years of controlling behaviour, including having her phone checked, being followed to work and being subjected to constant accusations of infidelity.
The woman also alleged that alcohol and drug misuse contributed to his behaviour and said the emotional impact of the relationship had been long-lasting.
She said she had been just 21 years old when the relationship began and admitted she had initially believed the explanations and excuses she was given.
“I’ve been on the other end of his temper, how he can be under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and the damage has been long lasting,” she wrote.
The woman also claimed attempts to co-parent eventually broke down after her former partner failed to address concerns surrounding substance misuse and his mental health.
She said her children remain safe, healthy and well cared for, adding that every decision she has made has been in their best interests.
Addressing criticism she expected to receive, the woman acknowledged some people would dismiss her as a “spiteful ex” or “bitter baby mum”, but insisted her reason for speaking publicly was to raise awareness.
“I’ve got nothing to hide,” she wrote.
“I didn’t think this status would blow up as much as it has, but in all honesty it’s more for awareness more than anything.”
Alongside her statement, she shared photographs of injuries she says she sustained during the relationship, screenshots of messages warning another woman and links to previous news reports relating to her former partner.
She urged other women not to ignore warning signs in relationships.
“Ladies, please don’t be fooled by the good looks or the charm,” she wrote. “It doesn’t last long and soon the red flags will creep in.”
The post has prompted hundreds of comments and reactions online, with many people praising her courage in speaking publicly and sharing their own experiences of abusive relationships.
