2017 – Convicted rapist jailed after terrifying former partner with threats and abuse
A convicted rapist has been jailed after subjecting his former partner to a frightening and degrading ordeal, including threats of rape, verbal abuse and physical violence.
Hull Crown Court heard how Gary Terry forced his way into his ex-partner’s home in Driffield during a deeply distressing incident that left the woman fearing for her safety.
The court was told that the victim, a woman in her 20s, had previously been in a relationship with Terry, aged 55, but had not been aware of his past convictions for rape and indecent assault at the time.
On the day of the incident, the woman had returned home after going out for a meal. Later, at around 1.15am, Terry became aggressive after accusing her of ignoring him.
Prosecutor Simon Clegg described how Terry later returned to the property, shouting from outside and demanding she come downstairs. When she refused, he let himself into the house and made his way upstairs.
The victim told the court she heard him running up the stairs before he entered her bedroom, where she was naked in bed. Terry knelt beside her bed and angrily demanded that she kiss him. When she refused and repeatedly told him to leave, the situation escalated further.
Without warning, Terry pulled the duvet from the bed, leaving the victim exposed. He then stood over her, clenching his fists and shouting threats, including that he would rape her.
In a statement read to the court, the victim described how she tried to cover herself with a pillow while Terry loomed over her, continuing to shout abuse and intimidation.
The ordeal did not end there. The court heard that earlier, during an argument, Terry had grabbed the victim’s mobile phone and snapped it in half. He then pushed her onto the bed, causing her to strike her head against the headboard, before throwing pieces of the broken phone at her, leaving her with a cut to the head.
Following the incident, the victim fled the house in fear and waited in her car until it was safe to return. When her current partner later arrived, Terry made further abusive remarks before leaving the scene.
The victim, supported by her sister, later reported the incident to police.
Terry was subsequently found waiting in his car and followed the women around Driffield. When officers caught up with him, he was found to be significantly over the legal alcohol limit — three times over at the roadside and still twice over at the police station.
During sentencing, Judge Mark Bury described Terry’s behaviour as degrading and humiliating, particularly his actions in exposing the victim and the threatening language he used.
The judge told him that the seriousness of the offences, combined with his conduct, meant that only an immediate custodial sentence was appropriate.
Terry, of Clements Close, Driffield, admitted charges including harassment, drink-driving, common assault and criminal damage.
He was sentenced to 20 months in prison.
