2018 – Whitby musician who abused children now released

Keith Swales – once a familiar face on the Whitby music scene – has finished the custodial part of a 10-year sentence imposed in 2018 for historic sex offences against three females.

A jury at Leeds Crown Court had convicted the now-63-year-old of six indecent assaults on two girls under 13 during the late 1980s and early 1990s, together with a later sexual assault on a sleeping young woman. During sentencing, Recorder Andrew Dallas called Swales’s behaviour “very serious offending” that left “deep trauma” and “destroyed many lives”.

Victim statements read to the court described continuing flashbacks, anxiety and guilt decades after the abuse. One woman told the jury she considered harming herself in the run-up to the trial; another said the crimes left her fearful of men.

Swales must serve the remainder of his term on licence and obey an open-ended Sexual Harm Prevention Order that bans him from living with, or having unsupervised contact with, girls under 16. Breaching those conditions could see him sent straight back to jail.
