Thoifojul Islam – Norwich

A man “lured” his ex-partner to a city road before jumping onto her car and repeatedly kicking the window, showering her in glass as part of a terrifying attack.

Thoifojul Islam, 35, told the woman he had been stabbed and she drove to Robin Hood Road in Norwich to help him, with her three-year-old son in the car.

Norwich Crown Court heard the woman turned up and found out Islam, who had been taking drugs, had not been injured prompting an argument between them.

Chris Youell, prosecuting, said Islam “jumped onto the bonnet” of the car and “repeatedly kicked the window” while she was driving.

Islam fell off but jumped back on and continued to kick the window, causing glass to shatter over the victim and “cut her”.

Islam punched his partner in the face two or three times before he tried to “drag her out of the car”.

The woman, whose child remained in the car throughout, tried to reverse the car back towards Hall Road when Islam ran off.

Mr Youell said the woman suffered a nosebleed and cuts in the incident on August 23 last year. Her child was unhurt.

Islam, of Bethel Street, Norwich, appeared at court on Friday (May 15) after he previously admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

He also admitted separate offences of burglary – in which about £13,500 of laptops and electrical equipment were stolen from businesses located at Kiln House in Pottergate on February 10 last year – causing about £8,000 worth of damage.

In addition, Islam admitted criminal damage and common assault in another incident on August 23 last year.

Recorder Nicola Fitches said Islam had committed a “sinister act” in “luring” the victim – a lone woman with a child in her car – to the scene on the pretence he had been seriously injured.

“The attack itself must’ve been absolutely terrifying for her and her child who was sat behind her,” said Recorder Fitches.

She said Islam “stamped on her windscreen until it shattered and then tried to drag her out of the car” adding that it had been a “prolonged and persistent assault”.

Imposing an extended four year and six month sentence – made up of 30 months custody and 24 months on licence – Recorder Fitches found Islam to be a dangerous offender with a “history of violent offences”.

Martin Ivory, mitigating, said Islam – who has eight convictions for 16 previous offences – is someone who has issues.

Islam was also made the subject of a restraining order, banning him from contacting his former partner and the other assault victim directly or indirectly for five years.
