JAMES EDWARDS – PORTSMOUTH

Man Jailed for Coercive Control Following Woman’s Tragic Death

James Edwards was sentenced to 2 years and 3 months in prison on 7 November 2025 after pleading guilty to coercive control.

This case comes after the tragic loss of Skye Nicholls, who took her own life in June 2023. During sentencing, the judge stated there was “no doubt” in his mind that Edwards had a bearing on her death, noting that he had repeatedly told Skye to take her own life.

Skye endured extreme and sustained abuse, described by her family as abhorrent. Throughout the relationship, she shared text messages, voice notes, videos and images with friends and family, documenting what she was going through.

Evidence presented in court included two police reports:

* One incident where Edwards assaulted Skye outside his flat in Portsmouth, with a neighbour stepping in before Edwards allegedly threatened to kill him.
* A second incident where Skye contacted police while Edwards was driving at high speeds, leaving her in fear for both of their lives.

There are currently no news articles covering Skye’s story, due to the police not meeting a reporting deadline. Her family — Ashlie Kendall, JJ Nicholls, and loved ones — are now speaking out to raise awareness of coercive control and ensure Skye’s story is heard.
