South Shields man handed five-year restraining order after harassment conviction

A South Shields man has been handed a five-year restraining order after being found guilty of harassment without violence.

Scott Young, 40, appeared before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 15, where he was sentenced following the offence.

The court heard that Young had previously been found guilty of the charge against him. Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order and ordered him to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

In addition to the community sentence, Young was also given a five-year restraining order, preventing him from making any contact with the victim.

The case has drawn attention locally due to wider concerns surrounding Young’s alleged behaviour, with members of the public raising fears over intimidation, harassment, and ongoing distress caused to those involved.

The restraining order now legally prohibits any direct or indirect contact, offering long-term protection for the victim while ensuring further breaches could result in more serious criminal consequences.

Residents in South Shields have since reacted strongly online, with many saying they hope the order provides peace and protection moving forward.
