Man ordered to pay compensation after knife injury incident

A 26-year-old man has been ordered to pay compensation after a court heard he injured his then-partner with a kitchen knife.

Carlisle Crown Court was told that Kirk Satterthwaite, of Hallgarth Circle, Kendal, caused a shoulder wound to her during an incident at her home in Kirkby Stephen on July 14.

The prosecution said the couple had been in a turbulent relationship for around two years. On the day of the incident, they had been drinking before returning to her home, where an argument developed. The court heard Satterthwaite became agitated and picked up a kitchen knife, which struck her in the shoulder.

She went to the bathroom to stem the bleeding. When she returned, the court heard Satterthwaite was eating and later wiped the knife on his trousers.

Satterthwaite pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm but claimed the injury occurred accidentally while he was handling the knife in the kitchen. However, after hearing evidence, the judge rejected that explanation, stating the nature of the wound indicated the knife had been pushed very close to her rather than merely waved around.

The court also heard that Satterthwaite had consumed a significant amount of alcohol that day.

He was ordered to pay £400 compensation to the victim and placed under 12 months’ probation supervision. He was also made subject to a three-month electronically monitored curfew between 9pm and 6am and banned indefinitely from contacting his former partner.

The judge told him he needed to address his behaviour and substance use.
