A convicted paedophile who repeatedly sexually abused and raped two children aged under 13, has died in a Lancashire prison.
Window cleaner Paul Griffiths of Barrow-in-Furness was sentenced to 20 years in 2009 after he and co-defendant Paul Martindale were convicted of multiple offences including rape, gross indecency and cruelty relating to two children aged under 13.
Griffiths has died in prison.
He was pronounced dead on April 6th by medical staff at HMP Wymott near Leyland.
The prison is predominantly used to house sex offenders.
An inquest into Griffiths’ death was opened and adjourned at Preston Coroners’ Court on Thursday April 16.
Area Coroner Emma Mather confirmed Griffiths was 57 at the time of his death and said: “I am told that the deceased died whilst a serving prisoner.
“An investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) is required to take place. The body of Paul Griffiths was identified to a police officer by prison medical staff.”
The inquest was adjourned pending the PPO investigation.
