Accrington Man Assaulted Mother Undergoing Brain Tumour Treatment During Row Over Money

A 20-year-old man from Accrington has been sentenced after assaulting his mother while she was undergoing treatment for a brain tumour.

Blackburn Magistrates’ Court heard that at the time of the incident, Kieran O’Brien’s mother was seriously unwell and receiving medical care for a brain tumour. Despite her condition, an argument broke out between the pair over money, which escalated into violence.

The court was told that following the incident, O’Brien’s mother was left frightened of her own son. In a statement to police, she said she felt unable to continue living with him, describing herself as “a nervous wreck” and saying she could no longer cope with the situation.

O’Brien, of Paxton Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order, requiring him to complete 120 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £150 in compensation.

In addition, the court granted a two-year restraining order, prohibiting O’Brien from contacting his mother or attending her home address.

The case highlights the devastating impact of domestic abuse within families, particularly when vulnerable victims are involved.
