Man Jailed After Kicking Pregnant Ex-Partner and Launching Brutal Drug-Fuelled Attack

Luke Enos, 38, of Victoria Crescent, Newport, has been jailed after carrying out a sustained and violent assault on his pregnant former partner while under the influence of alcohol and crack cocaine.

Cardiff Crown Court heard the attack took place on Thursday, September 11 last year, when the victim — who was four-and-a-half months pregnant with Enos’ child — visited his home to discuss arrangements for their dogs following the breakdown of their three-and-a-half-year relationship.

Prosecutor Jac Brown told the court that Enos began drinking alcohol and smoking crack cocaine, becoming increasingly erratic. When the woman said she was leaving, he became enraged.

Despite knowing she was pregnant, Enos kicked her in the stomach, strangled her, bit her head, dragged her across the floor by her hair and repeatedly punched her. The court heard she was left terrified for her life.

In a further act described by the judge as humiliating and degrading, Enos stripped naked and masturbated in front of her before spitting at her.

The victim managed to escape and ran to a nearby taxi office, where staff contacted police. Enos was arrested shortly afterwards.

During sentencing, it was not revealed — despite the judge asking — what had happened to the pregnancy following the assault.

In a victim impact statement, the woman addressed Enos directly, saying:

“Why did you tell me you loved me and treat me like this?”

She added:
“He makes me feel sick. I keep having flashbacks.
I saw him laughing and joking outside the courtroom during his trial.
The hurt and pain will never leave me.”

Enos was found guilty after trial of intentional strangulation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Sentencing him to two years in prison, Judge Paul Thomas KC described the attack as “merciless and brutal.”

He told Enos:
“This was a horrible thing to do to a woman, let alone a pregnant woman. She didn’t know if you would stop or if you would kill her. She was at your mercy.”

Enos was also made subject to a five-year restraining order prohibiting him from contacting his former partner.
