DEESIDE MAN JAILED AFTER STRANGLING AND STALKING EX-PARTNER

A man from Deeside has been jailed after strangling and repeatedly harassing his former partner.

Jamie Challoner, 38, of Powys Close, Queensferry, was sentenced at Mold Crown Court after admitting assault by beating and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The court heard Challoner had been in a long-term relationship with the victim, Amy Ashbrook, with whom he shares children. Prosecutors said the relationship later became controlling and abusive.

On 13 July last year, Challoner attacked Ms Ashbrook at her home in Shotton, strangling her to the point her eyes rolled back. He also repeatedly punched her, causing bleeding to her face, and spat at her during the assault.

Following the incident, and while on police bail, Challoner continued to contact the victim, repeatedly calling and messaging her. The court was told this behaviour left her living in constant fear.

Challoner has a history of offending, with 19 previous convictions for 29 offences, including earlier incidents involving the same victim.

Sentencing, Judge Rhys Rowlands imposed a prison term of three years and six months. A restraining order was also issued, preventing Challoner from contacting Ms Ashbrook for five years.
