Man Jailed for Intentional Strangulation Released on Licence

A man from West Yorkshire who was jailed for violent offences against a former partner has been released from prison after serving part of his sentence.

James Craig Butterworth, 34, from Dewsbury, was sentenced to 21 months’ imprisonment after being convicted of two counts of intentional strangulation. The offences related to violence against his former partner.

Court documents confirm that the case was concluded following a hearing, at which a restraining order was also granted. The sentence meant Butterworth served approximately 10 and a half months in custody before being released.

An official notification confirmed that Butterworth was released from prison on 22 December 2025 and is now subject to strict licence conditions. Authorities advised that any breaches or concerns should be reported immediately to the police.

Intentional strangulation is recognised as a serious domestic abuse offence, often associated with a high risk of escalation. Safeguarding agencies consistently warn that a history of such behaviour can place future partners at significant risk.

The case highlights ongoing concerns around domestic violence offenders returning to the community and the importance of awareness, reporting, and protective measures for those who may come into contact with them.
