Lowestoft man jailed for chasing woman from home with knife

A woman who was chased from her own home and forced to hide in a neighbour’s garden said she feared it will “take something really bad” for people to realise her former partner has not changed.

Kevin Heslop is now facing time behind bars after an argument at his former partner’s home spiralled out of control.

The pair had been drinking at the woman’s home in Lowestoft on September 19 last year. There was a suggestion that they go to the pub with their adult son when Heslop became “angry and aggressive”, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

The woman had learned to keep knives hidden when Heslop was around, the court heard, but he managed to locate one and chased the woman from the house. She hid first behind some bins and then in her neighbour’s garden.

The woman could hear Heslop shouting at her son and went back inside to intervene.

Heslop then shouted at her: “I’m going to chop you up,” and advanced on her with the knife and a bottle of vodka, which he threw at his son when he tried to defend his mother.

In a victim impact statement, the woman said she truly believed Heslop would stab her and “chop her up”.

“I worry it will take something really bad for people to realise what Kevin is capable of, and that he has not changed,” she wrote.

Heslop, 46 and of no fixed address, was due to stand trial on Monday (February 23). However, on Wednesday (February 18) he entered guilty pleas to the charges of affray and common assault.

Recorder Nicola Fitches sentenced Heslop to two years and three months in prison.

She also banned him from contacting the woman.
