Jade Louise Devey – Bridlington

Jade Louise Devey left an elderly Staffy to starve to death surrounded by his own waste.

In a case brought by the RSPCA, Devey pleaded guilty to two offences of causing unnecessary suffering to the 12-year-old Staffy named Dray Dray, who was found dead in her abandoned flat.

She left the dog behind after moving out of the property in Bronte Walk, Bridlington. His emaciated remains were discovered by her landlord who alerted the RSPCA

Devey was already known to the animal charity with Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) Dan Richardson first attending the address in January 2024 to investigate a report of an abandoned dog.

After hearing a dog barking from inside, ARO Richardson sealed the front door to the property with tape. He returned two days later to check if the property had been entered and the dog had been attended to.

He was met by Devey who told him she had been in hospital and had arranged for a friend to attend to Dray Dray. ARO Richardson told her that the intact tape on the door proved that no one had entered the property in the previous 48 hours. .

In his witness statement, ARO Richardson said: “I gave her advice that she needed to speak to her friend, as clearly they didn’t do what was asked.
“I advised that if she ends up in hospital again she needs to ensure someone is attending Dray Dray and that as the owner, she is ultimately responsible for his welfare.”

Two months later, in March 2024, ARO Richardson visited the address again in response to a call from Devey’s landlord, who had discovered Dray Dray’s lifeless body inside the abandoned home.

In his witness statement he described the tragic scene.
He said: “There were several piles of faeces on the floor and a large dried up puddle of urine.
“The kitchen also had several piles of faeces and another dried, crystalized puddle of urine and there were two dog bowls which were both empty.

“At the back of the kitchen near the cupboards, was a deceased light brown Staffordshire bull terrier type dog.
