Norwich sex offender messaged teen girl after prison release

A sex offender exposed by online paedophile hunters has admitted using a dating app to chat to a 14-year-old girl weeks after being released from prison.

Jamie Overson, 40, attempted to communicate with the youngster telling her that he was playing with himself.

Norwich Magistrates’ Court heard in online chats using the messaging and dating app Meet 24 he had also encouraged her to engage in a sex act telling her “women do it as well”.

It came shortly after he had been released from prison after a series of earlier offences against what he believed were girls aged 13 and 14.

The former binman and forklift driver pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

Appearing via video link from HMP Five Wells in Northamptonshire after being recalled to prison, he also admitted two breaches of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) over his use of the chat app.

Magistrates committed him to be sentenced at Norwich Crown Court on February 23.

Overson was arrested on June 12 last year after being confronted by the group at his home at Northumberland Street in Norwich.

He was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court in November after pleading guilty to five offences including sexual communication with a child and attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.

Overson was initially sentenced in 2023 to three years and three months for sex offences against what he believed were 13 and 14-year-olds but were in fact members of a group known as Phoenix Guardians of the Innocent.

The former binman and forklift driver had been confronted by the group in the garden of his home at Northumberland Street in Norwich.

He later attempted to reduce his jail term at the Court of Appeal claiming Judge Alice Robinson had not properly adjusted his sentence to reflect he had been exchanging online messages with ‘decoys’.

His appeal was dismissed after judges found he had exchanged a “very large number” of Whatsapp messages.

After his arrest he was also found to have messaged two other profiles purporting to be teen girls asking one to meet him in Blackpool.
