Wirral Man Jailed for Assault, Controlling and Coercive Behaviour and Strangulation

A Wirral man has been sentenced to a substantial prison term after being convicted of a sustained campaign of abusive behaviour and serious assaults against his former partner.

Christopher Randles, 43, of Alexandra Road in Birkenhead, was jailed for four years at Liverpool Crown Court on 13 November 2025 after being found guilty of a series of offences relating to his conduct over a period of approximately two years. 

The jury heard that the offending included multiple assaults on the victim, during which Randles caused significant injuries including knocking out her front teeth and inflicting bruising and swelling to her face. 

In addition to the physical assaults, Randles was convicted of engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour in the context of an intimate relationship. The court was also told he had committed an offence of intentional strangulation, and had engaged in other acts of intimidation, including throwing a substance over the victim and chasing her in the street with a machete. 

Randles was convicted following a trial in September 2025, with the jury finding him guilty of:
• Controlling and coercive behaviour
• Three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm
• Intentional strangulation
• Possession of a bladed article in a public place 

As part of his sentence, the judge also imposed a 10-year restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim. 

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police welcomed the sentence and emphasised the seriousness with which domestic abuse offences are treated. Officers have encouraged anyone who believes they may be at risk to seek help and reminder that information can be requested under Clare’s Law, the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, which allows police to release information about a person’s history of violence or abuse where it is appropriate to do so.
