Wrexham Man Jailed After Strangling Former Partner and Making Arson Threats

A Wrexham man who strangled his former partner and threatened to burn down her home has been jailed.

Craig Brown, 34, of Deva Way in Wrexham, appeared before Mold Crown Court for sentencing on Thursday, October 16.
He previously pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing on April 4 to intentional strangulation, criminal damage and threats to damage property.

During the relationship, Brown had made repeated threats — including smashing windows, setting fire to the victim’s home and pouring petrol through the letterbox.

On May 26 of last year, the victim had attended Brown’s home at around 7pm. At roughly 8.30pm, one of her acquaintances contacted her to check she was safe due to knowledge of Brown’s past threats. Following this, an argument broke out between the pair. As the victim walked towards the kitchen, Brown was described as suddenly becoming “red-faced with anger,” before placing both hands around her neck and strangling her.

He then threw her phone to the floor, smashing the screen, and ordered her to leave before changing his mind, apologising, and saying he would pay for the damage. Days later, Brown ended the relationship but went on to repeatedly harass the victim, phoning her and using abusive names.

The victim managed to record one of the phone calls, during which Brown admitted to strangling her and damaging her phone.

When told that she was going on holiday, Brown responded with “wait and see what happens,” which prosecutors argued was another implied threat to damage her home while she was away.

Brown was later interviewed and denied all allegations, including claiming the voice on the recorded phone call was not his. His defence referenced diagnoses of ADHD, depression and anxiety, stating he appeared to be “disgusted by his own actions.”

Passing sentence, Judge Simon Mills said:

“If you choose to lay your hands on a woman in this way, you will face the consequences.”

Brown received a 55-week custodial sentence.
A Domestic Abuse Protection Order was also granted, lasting seven years.

Anyone with concerns about a partner’s past behaviour is encouraged to request information under Clare’s Law – the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, which allows people to ask police whether someone has a history of abuse.
